Hidden Fees* (Скрытые Расходы)
by Viktoria Nikiforova, 2007

Capitalist Moscow is booming and two siblings struggle to read the fine print of their dreams. Vasya, a young computer salesman, buys into a housing development, believing a new home is an investment into his future and happiness. Liza, his sister, dreams of starting her own family without losing her promotion and concocts a seemingly flawless scheme. Little do they know, condos, supermarkets, and even babies have hidden fees. In this comedy we meet an upwardly mobile prostitute, a Kremlin insider whose fear of death is conquered only by his love for women and power, Vasya’s leggy loan officer, and her boss who knows how to take advantage of every situation. Hidden Fees reveals a cross section of society and gives us a picture of the price of progress. It’s more expensive than you think.

Studio Six original translations

In the past year, Studio Six has translated five new Russian plays and staged readings of two of them. “Hidden Fees*” will premiere in English for the first time at the 2008 NYC Fringe Festival. Beginning with a Russian script, we produce a basic translation. Reading aloud as a company we adapt, edit, and craft the script in a way we believe best conveys the author’s meaning in English. The process of translation, adaptation and ultimately staging is one that creatively engages us is every phase of production. We plan to bring many more new plays to New York audiences through this process, creating one-of-a-kind translations and productions of these works.
